Fraport Traffic Figures - May 2004: Frankfurt Airport Records Double-digit Traffic Growth in May / Passenger and Cargo Boom

Continues - Fraport Group's Airports Achieve Noticeable Increases

Frankfurt/Main, Germany (ots) - As in the previous months, Frankfurt Airport's (FRA) passenger figures rose noticeable again in May 2004. Fraport AG, the airport's owner and manager, recorded more than 4.4 million passengers at continental Europe's largest airport in the reporting month, some 11.9 percent more than in May 2003. Those regions most affected a year ago by the impact of the Iraq war and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) experienced above average growth.

Thus, FRA's traffic to destinations in North Africa, North America, the Middle East, and Asia rose by as much as 62.3 percent in May 2004. European traffic also grew again, due ultimately to the European Union's (EU) recent eastward expansion. This has benefited FRA with its 491 scheduled passenger connections per week to some 39 destinations in the new EU countries. Offering more than 62,000 seats per week, Frankfurt Airport accounts for more than 44 percent of Germany's total capacity to Eastern Europe.

During the first five months of 2004, more than 19.8 million passengers used FRA, an 8.9 percent increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

Frankfurt Airport also registered double-digit growth in airfreight. In May 2004, FRA's airfreight throughput rose to 147,315 metric tons, 18.2 percent more than in the same period last year. Intercontinental traffic also experienced above average growth in this traffic segment. Thus, the amount of airfreight to the Far East and North America grew particularly strongly. Routes to and from Latin America and Africa also recorded a noticeable increase. From January to May 2004, Frankfurt Airport's airfreight volume climbed 10.9 percent to 691,613 metric tons. Frankfurt Airport's airmail volume declined to 8,661 metric tons in the reporting month - due mainly to continuing service reductions in the domestic overnight airmail network based at FRA - down by 10.8 percent compared to May 2003.

With 40,873 takeoffs and landings in May 2004, Frankfurt Airport experienced a sizeable 7.1 percent increase in aircraft movements compared to the corresponding month last year. In tandem with this development, FRA's maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 11.2 percent to more than 2.3 million metric tons.

Combined, the Fraport Group's six airports served 6.8 million passengers in May 2004, some 19.9 percent more than in May 2003. With 237,555 passengers, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) registered a 17 percent increase in passenger traffic. With about 1.3 million passengers, Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey even recorded 81.3 percent growth compared to the same period last year. In Germany, Hanover Airport (HAJ) grew by 3.3 percent to 436,819 passengers and Saarbrücken Airport (SCN) by 2.9 percent to 43,709 passengers. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru achieved a 10.1 percent jump in traffic, growing to 402,674 passengers in May 2004.

Total cargo throughput for the Fraport Group expanded to 179,813 metric tons in May 2004, increasing by 15.8 percent compared to the corresponding month last year. The Fraport Group's airports had a total of 65,946 takeoffs and landings in May 2004, 9.6 percent more than the same month last year.
