Fraport Traffic Figures - September 2004: Traffic Growth at Frankfurt Airport Continues - Base-year Effects Dissipate

Frankfurt/Main, Germany (ots) -

Double-digit Increase for Cargo - Passenger Figures Up 3.1 Percent -

Third Quarter Record

Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Germany's busiest airport, again

registered noticeable traffic growth in September 2004. From July to

September 2004, FRA even achieved the best results for passenger

traffic, airfreight tonnage, and aircraft movements of any third

quarter in the airport's history.

Frankfurt Airport recorded double-digit cargo growth in the reporting

month, with total airfreight tonnage climbing 14.9 percent to

147,711 metric tons. This represents the third-best monthly cargo

result in FRA's history. Routes to and from South America

experienced particularly robust growth rates of about 60 percent.

The strong North American and Far East cargo markets recorded

increases of 12.6 and 14.6 percent respectively.

In the reporting month, passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport rose

3.1 percent over September 2003 to 4,834,572. This year-on-year

growth represents normal market growth, because the statistical

base-year effects (Iraq war, SARS, etc.) seen in the previous months

of 2004 have dissipated. Following relatively weak activity in the

August travel season, tourist traffic to southern Europe picked up

slightly in September 2004. In contrast, business travel activity on

domestic and European routes was stagnant. However, this failed to

dent strong overall passenger growth, primarily due to a continued

rise in both business and tourist travel activity in the

intercontinental sector.

Frankfurt Airport also registered noticeable growth in aircraft

movements. Some 41,433 take-offs and landings in September 2004

represented an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the same month

last year. This increase was mainly due to a rise in

intercontinental traffic as well as East European traffic. Both the

Middle East and the Far East saw double-figure growth rates. Flights

to and from Africa and South America also showed good growth.

Service reductions in FRA's overnight domestic airmail network

continued to impact overall airmail tonnage, which dropped by 4.4

percent to 9,348 metric tons.

Analogous to the individual monthly results, Frankfurt Airport

recorded excellent traffic results for the nine-month period from

January to September 2004, when FRA welcomed more than 38.8 million

passengers - a 6.4 percent increase compared to the first three

quarters of 2003. Air cargo tonnage climbed just under 13 percent to

almost 1.3 million metric tons, while airmail tonnage declined 7

percent to 85,371 metric tons. Aircraft movements grew by 3.6

percent.

The Fraport Group's airports together served 7,690,499 passengers in

September 2004, 5.5 percent more than in September 2003. Antalya

Airport (AYT) in Turkey recorded 1,580,417 passengers, up 12.9

percent. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru registered 408,155 passengers,

up 9.0 percent. With 251,509 passengers in the reporting month,

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) saw renewed strong growth of 8.6

percent. Hanover Airport (HAJ) received 561,371 passengers, up 4.0

percent. Saarbrücken Airport (SCN) had 55,429 passengers, down 1.5

percent.
