Bloomsday was marked in Ljubljana
Bloomsday - the annual celebration of Ireland's literary icon James Joyce and his novel Ulysses was marked in Ljubljana today Thursday 16 June at 10 am with a special event at Ljubljana Train Station, organised by the Embassy of Ireland in Slovenia in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This event which took place at Platform 1 of Ljubljana Railway Station, where a plaque by Slovenian sculptor, Jakov Brdar, commemorates Joyce and the night he spent in Ljubljana while en route to Trieste.
The Ambassador of Ireland to Slovenia, Mr Seán O Regan welcomed guests and introduced the event. Director of the Department for European Countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Milan Jazbec responded to the welcome noting the importance of the cultural connections between Ireland and Slovenia. Both Mr O Regan and Mr Jazbec read extracts from Ulysses in English and Slovene, as did Ms Neva Mužič, Translator.
The event concluded with food inspired by book and refreshments.
