Frankfurt Airport Welcomed Nearly
Five Million Passengers in August
Month of Records: Peak Figures Also for
Airfreight Tonnage and Aircraft Movements
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed 4,924,415 passengers and handled 42,286 take-offs and landings in August 2004 - more passengers and aircraft movements in a single month than at any other time in the airport's history. Fraport AG - FRA's owner and manager - also recorded the best August for airfreight, with 142,555 metric tons handled at FRA.
In August 2004, passenger traffic at Germany's busiest airport increased by 1.8 percent year-on-year to 4.9 million. For the eight-month period from January to August 2004, FRA even experienced 6.9 percent growth in passenger traffic. The major growth factor was a 5.4 percent increase in intercontinental passenger traffic. India and China recorded particularly robust growth rates, while Japan also picked up again.
Airfreight tonnage at FRA increased by about one-seventh, or 14.7 percent, compared to August 2003. Growth rates were particularly high on routes to Latin America (45 percent), North Africa (37 percent) and the Middle East (20 percent). The Far East (9 percent) and North America (10 percent) also experienced dynamic growth. Over the January-to-August 2004 period FRA's airfreight volume jumped by 12.6 percent.
Service reductions in FRA's domestic overnight airmail network again impacted total airmail tonnage in August 2004, with only 8,645 metric tons of airmail (down 8.4 percent) handled.
Up 5.1 percent, aircraft movements at Frankfurt Airport reached a new monthly peak. In addition, aircraft movements reached a new daily peak on August 27, when FRA recorded 1,457 take-offs and landings. This growth was due mainly to a rise in intercontinental traffic as well as East European traffic. Following a period of stagnation or decline, domestic flights began to pick up again. The share of wide-body jets at Frankfurt Airport rose to 26.7 percent in the reporting month.
Most of the other airports of the Fraport Group also achieved strong results in August 2004. Combined passenger traffic for the six Fraport airports grew by 5.1 percent to 8,365,848 in the reporting month. With 2,059,717 passengers, Turkey's Antalya Airport (AYT) recorded 15.1 percent growth compared to the same period last year. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru achieved a 9.0 percent jump in traffic, growing to 488,640 passengers in August 2004.
